If you did not enter a name when you created your Bambu account, the system hands you a numbered name starting with user_. The forum thread on it has been viewed more than 12,000 times. The person who opened it summed up the complaint like this: that name turns up on their printer, in Bambu Studio and everywhere else.

Here is the real source of the confusion: there is no single name on the Bambu side. There are at least three separate names, each changed somewhere else, and changing one does not change the others. The original poster's own correction shows exactly that. They worked out on their own where the forum display name is changed, and even that does not change the forum username.

Which name shows where

Name Where it shows Where it changes
Bambu account nickname Printer screen, Bambu Studio, Handy, Bambu store Profile in the Handy app
Forum username On the forum only Forum profile, time limited
MakerWorld display name On the models and profiles you share MakerWorld account: no path given on the forum, check it yourself

Every path in that table comes from forum posts. The Handy and MakerWorld interfaces may have moved on since then, so check the steps against your own version.

Account nickname: through Handy

The accepted answer on the forum points at the Bambu Handy app:

In the Handy app, click on the lower right Me tab. Then next to your user name at the top is a little pencil icon.

The date of that answer matters. The thread was opened in July 2023, but this accepted answer was written in March 2026, so it is not a three-year-old recipe gone stale but a current reply added to the thread later. The first reply back in 2023 pointed at the same place, only more loosely: profile settings in Handy.

Before you do it in the app, make sure you are signed into the right account, because Studio and Handy sitting on different accounts is common. Tap the pencil icon, type the new name and save. The forum calls this field Nickname.

No forum reply points at a field inside desktop Bambu Studio for changing this name. In March 2026 someone asked precisely "how do I change the name in Studio" and the answer was Handy again.

The forum name is separate, and timed

The forum name is a separate thing entirely, and there is a hard rule on it: the forum software limits username changes to the first three days after signup. Inside that window you change it yourself. Here is the path described on the forum in 2023: click your profile picture → UserPreferencesAccount → the pencil icon next to Username. That is a three-year-old recipe, so the Discourse interface may have changed since.

Once three days have passed you cannot change it yourself. One of the moderators opened a dedicated thread for this in 2024: you post the name you want there and get a one-time change. The rules are stated there too. The name must not be taken, must contain no spaces (use underscores), must end in a letter or a number, and must be family-friendly.

That three-day limit is not Bambu's decision. It is the default in Discourse, the software the forum runs on. People were still asking the same question in 2026, so the flow has not changed.

The forum also has two separate fields, "name" and "username". Filling in the display name does not change the username, and that is where people get stuck most often.

The MakerWorld side

In May 2024 a forum user wrote, in their own words and as far as they knew, that the names are actually carried over from MakerWorld: if you did not pick a name at signup and stayed on a user_ number, that name shows on the forum too. That is one user's comment, not a statement from Bambu. If it is right, the MakerWorld name and the forum name are not separate settings but the same one. Check them separately either way, in the profile section of your account settings.

This name matters because it sits next to every model and print profile you upload to MakerWorld. On a public account, a number starting with user_ is the identity everyone else sees in their profile list.

Check after changing it

Do not expect the name to update everywhere at once. A user in 2023 wrote that the change they made in Handy showed up in the store and on other Bambu sites, and in 2025 another said downloading Handy changed the name everywhere. The same thread also records the change failing to reach the forum. It does not land in every place at the same speed.

What to check afterwards:

  1. Handy: where you made the change, it shows there first.
  2. Printer screen: it displays the name of the bound account.
  3. Bambu Studio: if it does not update right away, sign out and back in. The forum records exactly this in November 2024: a user whose forum name had changed still saw the user_ number in Studio, and another replied that signing out of Studio and back in had fixed it for them.
  4. Forum and MakerWorld: separate settings, do not expect them to follow.

If the printer or Studio still shows the old name, consider a second possibility: that device may be bound to a different account than the one you think. Studio and Handy staying on separate accounts is common, and I covered lining the two up in the sign-in problems article.

If the printer is not showing the wrong name but is missing from Studio altogether, this is not a name problem. Look at connection errors instead.

Why the name matters

There are two concrete reasons. The first is sharing: this name sits next to every model and profile you upload to MakerWorld, and a number tells nobody anything about you.

The second is shared use. When several people use one printer, you tell who sent a print from the account name on the screen. Put two user_ accounts side by side and that information is useless. Fix the names and anyone looking at the queue can see who printed what.
